After a lot of thinking I think I’ve settled on offloading a bit more gear at the end of May. While I was trying to figure a total dollar amount sitting here in photographic equipment I realized that there are some things I just haven’t used in forever (maybe once a year in some cases). There’s no sense in that.

The funny this is that this decision came about after passing up the chance to bring another medium format camera to live with me. I love film cameras and that will never go away but the times in which I will chose to shoot film are few and far between so I sadly declined. I already have 3 sitting here missing the light. That got me thinking about what else I don’t use and then I had to ask myself why I would keep those pieces. Anyway, for you fellow photonerds I haven’t decided exactly what I want to offload yet but as soon as I do you can be sure a post will go out about it.

You know I have a busy day in front of me when the daily photo goes up first thing in the morning. Of course, I have this set up to syndicate to the social media sites every few hours so it’s not going to seem so impressive when it finally gets to you.

Truth be told it looks like I’m running fairly stable with the new drive so once this backup of the backup finishes I’m going to go switch the Macs out. I didn’t want the post to be delayed if there was some unforeseen issue. There shouldn’t be. Lord knows I’ve spent enough time preparing to upgrade this beast. Through all of this my workspace has become a complete disaster too so hopefully I’ll be able to make some time to remedy that too. It may be time to bring on an intern.

It seems the backup drive issue is finally solved. The solution? I went and bought a new interface for the drive taking it from Firewire 800 to thunderbolt. It’s $200 solution, but it’s a solution.

So why does this matter? Well, if any of you are having issues with a Seagate GoFlex drive on your Mac this pertains to you. I’m not going to get into a technical breakdown of the why, but basically there is a problem with the drive (specifically the Seagate GoFlex 3TB usb and firewire versions) and the latest OSX. There are no software updates as of this post and since the problem has gone unaddressed for at least 6 months, I don’t believe there will be. Time Machine just flat out doesn’t work with this drive out of the box. I’ve tried everything and the drive just doesn’t work properly with it’s stock configuration. My last effort outside of switching manufacturers (and losing a terabyte of storage space) was to take advantage of the interchangeable bases on this drive and upgrade it to a thunderbolt base. It’s not an ideal situation but the upside is that the transfer speed of the drive is increased with the new base.

I’m going to give it a few days of testing to make sure it’s solid now, but the outlook is good.

Definitely a full day in the studio today. Several models and more jewelry than I can count!

This shot just had to go out before I go to bed though. I hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend. I’m cutting it short tonight.

After a long day or writing and rewriting, the article I spoke about the other day is done.

As with anything I’m sure I missed some points, so I may or may not make a “part 2″ but overall I think it makes it’s point. The piece is “Building Wealth as a Photographer” and it’s up on Fstoppers.com. I’m no financial guru over here, but what I talk about is exactly what I do myself to keep my own future where I want it to be. There is always more to learn, and always a better way to do something but I hope you gain even a little bit from it. I want us all to have the lives we dream about.

As I’m sitting here writing this something pretty profound came out of the cartoon I put on in the background. It said “make your next move your best move.”

I love this quote! Of course it begs the question of what the best move is, but still. I think deep down each of us knows what choices will be best for us. It just comes down to whether or not we have the courage to do whatever that thing might be.

Productive days in wonderful weather just make the accomplishments that much sweeter. Don’t they?

Granted most of my day was taken up by meetings, but the other (smaller) things like washing and vacuuming my car were just awesome. That’s not a word I have ever used to describe any sort of chore before. It’s just the fact that today was beautiful. I also finally got this backup issue worked out so after one last test to make sure all of my data is in-tact and safe. I’m going to replace this machine…and hopefully replace it in the morning. I’m excited!

I allude to a lot of things on this blog, and for good reason. Many of my contracts require non-disclosures. However, I have something that I’m working on specifically for my fellow photographers and other creatives. While I would normally promote something like this after launch, this one is important and I don’t want you to miss it.

On Saturday I’m going to release an article about building a financial future as a creative. If you make your living as an artist I can promise you that you will need to read it.

Time Machine on my Mac has apparently decided that life was perfect about a month or two ago, and decided that it doesn’t need to back anything up anymore. Not cool Time Machine, not cool.

Have any of you fellow Apple users dealt with this? It occurred to me that it may be a hard drive issue but everything checks out ok when I run scans on it so I’m kinda stumped. I’ve got it trying to back up one more time so hopefully that works and I wake up to a fully backed up system. If not I guess it’s off to replace the backup drive. The sad thing is that I can’t really go upgrade the workstation until I’m sure it’s backed up safely across all the drives. If anyone has a thought about this issue feel free to let me know.

I told myself yesterday that it was my last day of eating less than healthy food.

Loni by David Bickley Photography

Then a “buy one get one free” coupon to Chipotle showed up. Oh cruel fate! Of course I had to get one (meaning two). There was no way to stop the train wreck. I’ll get back to my dedication tomorrow. For the record, I at least didn’t eat them both in the same sitting. That’s something right?

They were so delicious though.
