I wanted to point something out by using today’s image.

The thing I wanted to point out is how different a person can be portrayed just by changing the lighting and expression. Here Ron almost seems like he’s unapproachable, or kind-of above “it all.” In short, it’s not really a great portrayal of how he actually is but it definitely illustrates the point. If you compare the two shots it’s obvious which man you would want to sit down and have a conversation with.
As portrait artists it’s our responsibility to capture the core of a person. There is much more to that than just getting them to relax and smile (if they’re a smiley person). Everything about the image should support who they are. It’s vital.
