Had the privilege today of being able to do a brief one-on-one instructional session with a budding local photographer.
Studio lights can be phenomenally intimidating to anyone that’s never used them before. Natural light is one thing, but being completely in charge of the light is a different animal. With natural light you pretty much have to deal with what you get unless you have a lot of modifiers or additional light sources on hand. The sun provides, and you manage it. In the studio you have far greater control for sure, but it can take a fair amount of time to get used to how to handle that.
As with anything it just takes time to get to know the methods and practice. I have to say though, for the first time trying it she did a great job, and certainly would have even if I weren’t there for guidance.
See you tomorrow,
